Equality essay Essays Equality essay Essay Equality essay Essay Joel Augustine Response to class exercise: Today in our group the task at hand was to build the tallest freestanding structure using spaghetti, tape, string, and a marshmallow. We only had 18 minutes to build it and the final measurement would be measured from the top of the desk to the marshmallow at the top. When the timer went off our group was silent. I guess everyone was trying to plan out how we were going to do this. I decided it would be best to start of by making a base for this structure. It felt weird to be the first one to put an idea out, but the clock was ticking down, and the pressure was intensifying. After we built to base, which was a tripod of sorts I started to see assurance in the face of the people in my group. In my head I only had one thought, I had to win, well my group had to win. So I was putting out idea after idea, and melding them with the ideas of the my teammates. When we had about 20 inches, I saw that the spaghetti was leaning to one side. Thats when one of my teammates, I wont mention his name for his sake Ill call him Y. V kept saying that this ideas was not going to work and he kept moving the base of our structure, it almost fell. I got frustrated and told him to stop because I really didnt want to lose. I told him to not touch it unless I tell him to move something. Even though I saw that it was leaning I decided what the heck well just keep doing what were doing. And I became anxious when I saw the clock we only had about 8 minutes. We had enough time to come up with another idea put the pressure was too much. Then I decided to shake off the pressure, I had to, if we wanted to win. But it was too late. I was so caught up in myself and me winning I sort of blocked out what everyone around me was saying. One of the people in my group suggested using the string and tie to the top of the structure and then tape it to the desk so that it would stop leaning. I weighed out the outcomes and to me it looked pretty good. But it was too late we had about 30 seconds and only enough time to put on the marshmallow and watch the entire structure fall to one side from the excessive weight of the marshmallow. I think the reason I didnt listen to anyone about it leaning and soon falling was because I was so proud my plan, the plan I came up with was working. Also I wanted he people in my group to think I was smart and had good ideas. So when someone pointed out a defect, I couldnt stand for that. Also I didnt come up with any new ideas because every time I looked at the clock the time was ticking down faster and faster. So my brain sort of paused and I couldnt come up with anything to fix the problem at hand other than adding more spokes to the base. I wish I was able to clear up my mind. All over the world, the smartphone experience is being shared by more and more people every day. The convergence of mobile telephony, Internet services, and personal computing devices is resulting in the emergence of a â€Å"mobile Internet† (Ishii 2004; Funk 2001). The key devices for accessing the mobile Internet -currently dubbed â€Å"smartphones† are powerful new computing devices offering traditional wireless voice service as well as native software applications and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to connect to and run a myriad of Internet-based services including email, geo-location, streaming video, and social networking, while providing a good user experience. The business opportunities presented by this new category have attracted many of the major global information and communications technology (ICT) firms, including firms from the mobile telephony, personal computer, Internet, and personal digital assistant (PDA) industries, into a complex new landscape of competition. For many of these firms, capturing a portion of the total value created by the smartphone industry is believed to be a key to future growth and profits. The interest is understandable. Today more than 1. 3 billion mobile phone handsets are being sold annually, and in 2010 smartphones made up almost 20% of that total (Gartner, 2010; Ahonen, 2010). Sales of smartphones are increasing almost 100% per year, and total global sales volume is expected to surpass that of PCs by 2012 (Gartner, 2010). By collapsing the boundaries between previously distinct devices, smartphones are subsuming sales of mobile phones entirely and, increasingly, netbook and notebook PCs. To complicate the landscape, the smartphone is not the only device at stake, tablets and ebook readers are emerging as key components of the mobile universe. Across all devices, total mobile revenues including advertising, subscriptions, handsets, applications, and so on are forecast to surpass $1 trillion by 2014 (Gartner, 2010). Given the rate at which smartphone are penetrating the market and component prices are declining by 2015 there will be, at least, 2 billion smart mobile devices in use globally. But if proof is in the numbers, investors may find it hard to argue against the crew running Apple now. The company is conservatively projected to report a 44% revenue gain for its just-ended fiscal year — with earnings expected to post a gain of more than 60% from the previous year. Apple’s stock is up more than 70% from the day Jobs passed away, despite the stated concerns at the time of many investors and analysts about how well the company could keep its pace of innovation without its chief visionary at the helm. The Message in the Music Essay -- Song Analysis Essays Compare Contras

The Message in the Music Music means many different things to many different people. To a listener, a song is sometimes for four simple minutes of entertainment, but sometimes it is much more. Sometimes, a song is a message from the artist. This is much the same way from the opposite end of the spectrum. An artists message can get so complex that it is completely lost on the listener. This essay is about song analysis. I will be analyzing two songs performed by the same artist but performed with two different bands. Although performed by different groups, the music is similar and so is the message. The two bands being examined are Tool and A Perfect Circle. These are both considered rock bands and work within the same industrial vein. The bands major theme is that of religion. Unlike the popular religious music praising the Lords name on high, this music takes a drastic U-turn in the road to divinity by speaking of Jesus Christ the Savior in a sarcastic and uncaring tone. Lead singer Maynard James Keenan is an atheist. Although I feel these are excellent songs, I do not support the views taken, or supposedly taken, by the band. In the song Eulogy, the artist criticizes the Lord throughout the entire song as well as taking a sarcastic attitude when shedding a good light on Him. In the beginning of the song, the band sings, He had a lot to say. He had a lot of nothing to say. Well miss him. Were gonna miss him. The group is claiming that He might have had a lot to say, but it really amounted to nothing, maybe because they felt he didnt really mean anything he said. When saying that they are going to miss him, it seems like they have set themselves in a time when Jesus was about to be crucified and is saying they will miss... ... show how he no longer declares this savior his own. The song ends with the chorus which pretty much says the same thing, except when making reference to the spear, he uses the word spiteful, not hateful. Spiteful works much better in place of hateful. It make the listener realize that after all the things Jesus put them through that they are finally getting back at him, or spiting him. Both of these are excellent songs, simply for the fact that they have good melodies, strong choruses and insightful lyrics that make the listener think. For these facts, I will continue to listen to and enjoy these songs. Despite that, through analyzing the lyrics, Ive found messages that contradict my own personal beliefs. It goes to show that music can have a deeper and much different impact on peoples lives if they just take an extra minute to think about what they are hearing.

Primary School classroom Essay

These Poets write Honestly about their Experiences. Explore the Memories Expressed in their Poems and consider what Views they are sharing about Growing Up  Carol Ann Duffy expresses her views and gives her true experiences to do with childhood and growing up. She uses a range of techniques in her poems, like similes to emphasize her feelings and emotions and imagery, where she uses metaphors to help create the picture and mood of the atmosphere of each poem. For example, the Primary School classroom. Simon Armitage also writes about everyday experiences, childhood, growing up, changes and regrets. He uses less imagery than Carol Ann Duffy, but in one particular poem ‘Kid’, he uses a great more rhyme. They both include experiences towards school life, where Carol Ann Duffy writes about the younger years and Simon Armitage writes about the older years at school. These two poets are similar in some ways, but can be quite different in others. For example, in Duffy’s ‘Stealing’ it shares the feelings of a child who steals for no reason and Duffy adds comments from her own experiences. It can make the reader feel quite depressed and sad, whereas in ‘I am very Bothered’ by Simon Armitage, it is again about a child with regret for something he did at school, but instead of being sad it uses black humour and is more horrible â€Å"†¦stench of branded skin†¦Ã¢â‚¬  In ‘Mrs Tilscher’s Class’, Carol Ann Duffy starts with â€Å"you†, which makes it personal and sets the scene â€Å"travel up the Blue Nile†.  She identifies things like Primary School aspects very well â€Å"†¦with your finger, tracing the route†¦Ã¢â‚¬  This is a good reminder to what children do when they are little. She creates the picture of the blackboard â€Å"chalky Pyramids rubbed into dust†. This suggests break time and â€Å"the laugh of a bell swung by a running child† creates a jolly, happy time that all the kids look forward to. This gives a comparison between home and school. â€Å"This was better than home†. There are more interesting things to be found at school, like â€Å"enthralling books†, which is obviously what she doesn’t have at home.  She uses similes to describe the classroom. â€Å"The classroom glowed like a sweet shop†. This creates the idea of colour that a sweet shop would have.  She tells of a negative memory â€Å"Brady and Hindley†, which â€Å"faded, like the faint, uneasy smudge of a mistake†. School has so many good memories that it is able to make the bad ones disappear. She uses emotion â€Å"Mrs Tilscher loved you†, and alliteration â€Å"good gold star†, which makes the poem flow easier. It also sounds a bit like a child’s expression.  Ã¢â‚¬Å"A xylophone’s nonsense† gives the impression of tuneless playing, which kids do in Primary School, they don’t care about accuracy, just about having fun. It also appeals to the senses by using sounds as well as visual images.

Keep observing good management practice, such as making time for informal discussion and feedback (even though the pressure might seem that it is reasonable to let such things slip – during difficult change such practices are even more important). †¢ Give people time, to express their views, and support their decision making, providing coaching, counseling or information as appropriate, to help them through the loss curve. †¢ Where the change involves a loss, identifies what will or might replace that loss – loss is easier to cope with if there is something to replace it. This situation is what occurs in a small and tranquil French town in the movie Chocolat. This was a town which had its own rituals, its own ways of dealing with conflicts, and its own way of dealing with other people. This was the only way the people of this town had ever known to live their lives. So you can imagine the spectacle that arose when an outsider named Vien, and her daughter Anouk, moved themselves into this quiet little town, and turned it upside down. Vien shows this tranquil town something theyve never seen, nor wanted to see before. She shows them the powers of chocolate. The way in which Vien goes about bringing this sin into the lives of the townspeople is what makes separates this movie from the usual blockbusters of today that feel like they require s ex, drugs, and violence in order to create a good film. Chocolat is a classic example of how rebellious acts should be done and how rebellious people should handle adversity. Almost every blockbuster hit that is seen advertised today has some type of violence, bad language, or sexual scenes. Im not saying I dont like some of these movies, but they always manage to overshadow the quality films, like Chocolat, that actually send a productive message to its audience. Although this film makes a big deal out of something as little as chocolate, the point behind it all is that something different, something rebellious is being presented into a world of normality and repetitiveness.
